Shurugwi town council has embarked on the prepaid water meter project that is aimed at boosting the revenue collection.
The council has installed over 500 pre-paid meters in the (CBD), each prepaid water unit came at a cost of $360. Council would recoup the cost of meters from residences through a $2 surcharge every month.
Unki mine housing project at Impali source farm where more than 300 houses are set to be commissioned soon, already have prepaid water meters.
The new system will assist in recouping the outstanding arrears from residents who have not paying their water bills. Authorities estimate that this will increase the revenue water bills from the current $25.000 to $162.000 per month.
Advantages of using prepaid water meters are:
- 1- they allow residents to buy water and get their receipts on time
- 2- they flexible and convenient because a resident can do any transaction that they want.
- 3- they do not delay in receipting
In an interview with Mrs Sagonda a resident said the rechargeable meters are great they assist us in managing house hold budgets as we will be seeing the amount of water we would have used up.
Residents in areas that have not been covered yet urged the city council that they must speedily install the meters so as to cover the whole town.
