BACKGROUND
Shurugwi town is located in the Great Dyke 34 kilometers from Gweru. The population is 23 350 as per the 2014 census with a growth rate of 2%.
LOCAL ECONOMY
Our local economy is predominately mining with other ancillary activities like farming and small to medium enterprises (SMEs) playing a major role in stimulating the economic activities. The revival of ZIMASCO mines and operation of Unki platinum mines continue to bring hope to the survival of the town.
ADMINISTRATION
Council has 13 administrative wards represented by an elected councilor. Total staff compliment stands as follows
- 115 permanent employees
- 32 short term employees
HOUSING AND SOCIAL SERVICES
Shurugwi Town has a unique setup compared to other local authorities. Total housing stock is 4335 which comprise of ZIMASCO houses and Shurugwi Town Council. ZIMASCO is providing water services to its housing units and has a separate treatment plant. However, on solid waste management Council is providing the service.
LAND AVAILABILITY
The total land area is 1, 181 hectares and land that is developed is 234 hectares. Most of the remaining land falls under mining claims. However we have since approached the Rural District Council and our parent ministry for more land given the current status regarding incorporation.
A total of 600 hectares of additional land is required for Shurugwi development needs as indicated in our master plan.
Shurugwi Heritage
There are still some ceremonies done by the residents of Shurugwi such as the following
- Rain Ceremony where the Chiefs and the elderly gathers and pray for rains to their ancestors.
- When there are many accidents occurring at Boterekwa, the Chiefs goes and ask their ancestors for protection.
- Danravens Ceremonies, here one goes to the Danraven Falls if they are troubled by the world. They take their favorite clothe and tie it around a tree and tells it their grievances and leave it.
