Water Supply Challenges
Our major challenge with water supply in town and other locations within Shurugwi is in two parts
1. Water levels at Impali dam- The dam has gone down to 30% so we have reduced the pumping hours to 10 hrs a day. In those 10 hours we should supply the rest of Shurugwi.
2. Electricity power cuts – When electricity goes we wont be able to pump water. Raw water is pumped 8km from Impali to where we treat it. These areas are far apart and unfortunately electricity goes at different times. If there is electricity at the pump station and there is no electricity at the treatment plant we will not be able to pump water.
We have started to send the Firetender with water but unfortunately it cant come everyday, it has to go to other places also. But Council is working flat out to find a permanent solution to the water challenge. We are in the process of finding alternative water sources other than the Impali dam eg boreholes
